Hummingbirds are birds native to the Americas and comprise the biological family Trochilidae. With about 360 species, they occur from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego, but the vast majority of the species are found in the tropics. They are specialized for feeding on flower nectar, but all species consume flying insects or spiders.

This is the Calypte anna, aka Anna’s Hummingbird, named after Anna Massena, Duches of Rivoli. It is native to western coastal regions of North America. In the early 20th century, Anna’s hummingbirds bred only in northern Baja California and southern California.
