Forster’s Tern Gliding Over Still Water

$99.00$395.00

This tern is gliding ever so gracefully over still water with beak parted. Several of the terns are very similar in appearance. Forster’s Tern looks so much like a Common Tern that it was largely overlooked by Audubon and other pioneer birders. However, Forster’s is more of a marsh bird at most seasons, especially in summer, when it often nests on top of muskrat houses. Unlike Common Tern, Forster’s regularly winters along our southern coasts.

Forster’s tern is a tern in the family Laridae. The genus name Sterna is derived from Old English “stearn”, “tern”, and forsteri commemorates the naturalist Johann Reinhold Forster. It breeds inland in North America and winters south to the Caribbean and northern Central America.

Latin: Sterna forsteri
